Our Family

We are the Joneses.

A bizarre collection of individualists. We are seen here in our “Rock Star Pose” under Samuel’s direction. It would probably be a good album cover if we were all musicians. But we are not.

We celebrate creativity and diversity, spirituality and peace, journey and hope. We celebrate life in all its reality and beauty.

Would you like to meet the family?

This is Andrew, alias dad. He is 48. He is our great and courageous driver and chief of our cantankerous clan.

This is a photo of dad posing on a pillar in Ephesus. Dad can frequently be heard saying the following things over and over again.

“I am so glad we didn’t get that bus”,

“my mind is hungry I need to feed it”,

“just 5 minutes on the computer”,

“How about that lemon chicken in Hong Kong?”

or spouting off his own version of one of his dad’s jokes saved for just the right occasion. He loves to BBQ, Drive Maggie, Read, Blog and Learn.

Here’s the mother of the clan. Debbie is her name, but she’ll always be a mum.

She’s 50 and proud of it. No mater the circumstance, her glass is always half full, and there’s always a new adventure to come.

She lives to be creative, eccentric, and an influence for others to live an abnormal life.

She home schools her kids through discovering and observing the way they learn, and helps them flourish in their chosen paths.

She lives to create, rather it’s pottery, a new bookshelf in our truck, or an abstract way to patch a hole on her clothes.

Debbie and Andrew met in Belgium just before going on a ship that brought educational books into South and Central America. We got married over 20 years ago and have been developed stranger and stranger lifestyles ever since.

This is Lizzy. She is 18. Her writing efforts has greatly raised the standard of this page, among other places.

She chooses to live her life balancing the little girl inside her, who wants to fly, and the woman who seeks justice, understanding and belonging for all.

She is taking University classes, in creative writing, through Whitireia in Wellington, New Zealand, while she travels with us.

Her second love, next to writing, is her saxophone. She has played to many audiences including campers, hikers, the neighbours horses and the fish of the sea.

This is Abi. She’s 16 but feels much older.

She has had diabetes since she was 7 and dad likes to refer to her as ‘the World’s most adventurous diabetic’.

Already her life is mapped out with strange adventures, and she just doesn’t know how to fit it all in.

Recently she went skydiving, and this we believe is only the beginning.

In the meantime, she loves to cook, drastically modify her clothes, and hang with cool people. She lives to stay happy, extreme, and make the most of life.

This is Hannah. She’s 13 years old and is a self-confirmed information geek.

She reads non-stop, and is always eager to add to her fountain of facts and useless knowledge.

She’s also desperate to learn another language, but can’t decide which one.

She lives life in a rhythm of her own, and often sneaks into her own world as she devours a good book, or wanders down a hidden path. She marches to the beat of a different drum.

This is TJ. She is 9.

She loves to learn and meet new animals, and is determined to become a Zooligist.

When she’s not chasing a lizard, or swimming with squid, she’s telling jokes, playing her blow piano, or just having fun!

She aims to enjoy everything in life, and encourages others to join her.

She makes friends no matter the language, and learns what she can while she’s with them.

This is Sam. He’s 20.

Even though he’s no longer with us, is still very much a part of our group.

He’ll liven up any crowd, and make the stage work for him.

No matter what life throws at him, he’ll bounces back with a smile, and move on to what ever adventure comes next.

At the moment he’s living in New Zealand, where he’s studying film, and above all, enjoying life.
